Parable a;

I plan to start a commentary series on the parables of Jesus Christ.  Maybe 1 parable per post or more (still contemplating)

But let's see how it goes...

Luke 13:1-9

13:1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
13:2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?
13:3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
13:4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?
13:5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
13:6 Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.
13:7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'
13:8 "'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it.
13:9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"

Commentary :

So basically what happened is Pilate's soldiers came to the altar where the Priests were performing their priestly rites (sacrificing animals to God)  and these soldiers slaughtered every single person there.

Jesus said to the people that came reporting the incident to him.
He made them understand that bad things happen to both good and bad people, that they are not better than those people that lost their lives in the horrible incident  (just like we see in the world today).

As much as we sympathize with them, we should also use that opportunity to reflect on our lives and realize that this life is just temporal.
That we're alive is just an opportunity to add "manure" to it and make it right.

Ask yourself these questions! When I die;
Where will I be going to???
Did I live a good life here on earth???
What legacy will I be leaving behind?

And also realize we can't be holy in our own strength but we need to seek God and ask for Grace.

This also gives another perspective on how we take ourselves too seriously as if life won't just continue when we are gone.

Prioritize what really matters; your relationship with God,  be there for your loved ones,  love people and impact their lives.
Set your priorities right.

Finally, once again we're reminded of the fragility of life.  Make every moment count!.
